I have a friend from highschool who retired at 42 from a government job(you get to retire at minimum retirement after 20 years) he spends his day's riding his bike, working out and playing video games while his wife is at work, she is not happy about it and is openly resentful about it as she has to wait till she is 65(but she works in the private sector). His accountant called and advised him that renting a 3500 sf industrial suite for his toys was much cheaper than a divorce. The he learned that he was not the boss at home. Well, in retirement he went home and started following his wife around the home for a few weeks before coming up with 50 ways she could save time doing the things she does. he was an engineer and was always trying to re-engineer things. Noted for doing tremendous amounts of work with chain smoking and entire pots of coffee. I asked why he needed the suite and he said.well, i was a bit of perfectionist at the company.and he was. I asked what he was working on now and he said.oh I just trade some stocks. He agreed to meet and had me come by his office.where he'd rented a 3500 sf industrial suite. I met up with the owner of a company that my company had bought from him (that I worked for not owned) and he's netted himself a nice 8 figure check for the business he'd built up. I couldn't gently weed out all the stuff she's "collected" over the years so it's not noticed the piles are getting smaller. No more painting on a ladder, no more after breakfast nap (ok, 10 minutes). I found myself changing every thing I do around the house in order to placate stay at home. They even changed the platform used to to do distance learning over lunch one day. The work from home put some of that on steroids, especially since the school system changed directives almost daily. It's been six years of complaining about wanting to retire and not being able to to because of pension eligibility (she needs twenty years, which is this year, to step up another 30% or so). I went to the zoo and helped out with some event they're doing. I wrote a chapter on a character in a book that nobody will read. Ugh.see I'd much rather talk about.I painted a house today. And he cut all the tools I'd won with the last guy to be in this year's budget. Now we've got a micromanager that extends every meeting by 100%-200% who is hell bent on cutting costs when what we need and what the Board wants is growth. I went to this place with a cool boss, but the cool boss moved on. I guess I see retirement as being able to choose who your bosses are. Go make mistakes on preparation of something and delight in new discoveries. It's fun to keep rising and getting new challenges and I will have to find some new areas. We'll see how it all plays out once things are fully back to normal. I'd also like to build our retirement funds more. I was also out of the workforce as a stay at home parent for 10 years so I'm not as tired of working. I started a new career about 10 years ago so it's still fun for me, and I enjoy it. Today, I'd like to continue to work for another 10 years or so. He had to learn to just be comfortable hanging out at home and finding things to occupy his time. The pandemic was probably a good thing in some ways at it forced him to stay home and not be busy or do other things. Custom cut and wrap is not available for quarters!
